Hitting it Off, Thanks to the Algorithms of Love This article brings to light how reliant we are on other people and technology. The argument I see here on the personal level is whether or not we should be able to pick our own matches or have some one else do it for us. The argument seems rather one sided though as they only tell details from the dating sites where one gets to pick their dates. The details from the article are negative of those sites. In the end though I think we need to get out more, and go to the beach or mountains rather than live the seldom time we don’t need technology on the computer. Would you use an internet dating site? Are they the same as getting a blind date? Do we really set standards to high for our significant others? Is 60 dollars a month too much for something that you can get just by going to the mall?

Artifacts from the Future: Online Dating in 2020

This article is short. It talks of dating sites in 2020. The website shows an image of a website. The site is DNAmatch.com “find genetic bliss.” This vision scares me and the idea i have of life. To me life wouldn’t be the same if everything was perfect and everything worked on the first try.

Sure it’d be easy but wouldn’t it get boring very fast?

Though you’d have your perfect match do you really want to live with a carbon copy of your personality?

We gotta get out more

Roommates Who Click

“I really didn’t want to leave it to chance,” said Ms. Gilje, 18. “My sister woke up her first night of college and drunk people were poking her, asking where her roommate was. That’s when I realized I’m not going through that.” I think they are looking at this situation the wrong way. It’s a time that she is never gonna forget. It did her no harm, and probably makes her laugh till this day.

I think these sites take away from a another life experience, like dating sites take away that nervous hand shaking first impression. Being put with a roommate you have no idea who they are puts you into a situation where you are forced to interact or survive.

What happens when this freshman who got to pick his?her college, his/her roommate, his/her major, and his/her job isn’t able to pick their boss ( who is an a** )?

Will they make a site to pick your perfect best friend?

Search Takes a Social Turn

These websites sound like a better idea to me because they get us off the computer, away from technology, and out into the world. Say if you are on vacation they give us many options of things to do and we can read reviews to see how others liked it, and if we may like it too. Although i do think it will eventually sell out and become very money oriented and just get annoying.

Would you or do you use any of the location trackers?

Do you write reviews of a restaurant if it is good? what if it is bad?

Do you think people are more likely to write about a bad experience at a restaurant?

The Song Decoders at Pandora

Once again this seems like a more everyday person friendly tool than a corporate friendly tool. I say this because they are looking to get money from advertising from the big companies rather than from me or you. I may seem to have a double standard for pesty technology, but i like to see it bother those who bother us all day.

Do you listen to pandora?

Do you get annoyed by the commericials?

Are you open to pandora recommending music to you?

Would you be open to to some one recommending what groceries you should buy from a few items in your cart?

Recommender System entry on Wikipedia

Like advertisements last week that track your cookies or the websites you go to invading into your personal space; do Recommender Systems do the same?

Should there be a limit on what recommender systems track? just purchases? or non purchases just sites you browse?

How to Have Culture in an Algorithmic Age

Reading into the first few paragraphs i already feel like big brother is watching me more than ever. They are even stalking our reading habits. I think they are taking it a little too far. Not just them but the advertisers, and Recommender systems too. Un like the face book and other sites where you know that they are following or you are voluntarily putting your info in.
